Announcement: Scholarship award winner 2021-2021
We are pleased to announce that Dominique Rehl has been awarded the Liberty Ranch Addiction & Mental Health Scholarship 2021-2022. Dominique’s brother’s struggle with addiction motivated her to help others struggling with substance use disorders (SUD). Dominique is studying to be a physician. Her long-term goal is to work to “reduce stigma and increase access to care by educating our future medical professionals about evidence-based treatment options for SUDs and mental illness.”
As she enters her first year of medical school, Dominique plans to advocate for addiction training as a part of the medical education curriculum. Dominique hopes to complete an addiction medicine fellowship and intends to specialize in Emergency Medicine, as Emergency Rooms are key points of contact for those abusing substances. “As a physician trained in addiction medicine, I can help screen patients for SUDs, facilitate referrals to treatment, and provide overdose education.” She would also like to research how virtual technologies (VR) can be used to improve empathy in medical students for patients struggling with addiction.
We congratulate Dominique on being the first recipient of the Liberty Ranch scholarship. We are looking forward to seeing the important contribution she will have as she works to reduce stigma in the medical profession and increase access to treatment for those who need it.
